The National - My Debut
A very exciting week producing my first ever production at The National Theatre, an experience that was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. To everyone's surprise, it was a play! "Ravers," a vibrant and dynamic piece by the talented Rikki Beadle Blaire, was the centerpiece of this remarkable journey. This production was part of my role as the musical director for HOME MCR's young company, where I had the incredible opportunity to work closely as the musical supervisor on "Ravers." My responsibilities included not only overseeing the musical elements but also supporting the young actor-musicians in the cast, who showcased their talents by performing numerous songs live as part of the electrifying rave sequences that punctuated the play.
The rendition of "Ravers" was first staged in Theatre 2 at HOME and, much to our delight, it subsequently won the prestigious Connections competition, which brought the production to The National Theatre. To my joy and excitement, I had the privilege of accompanying the cast throughout this journey.
As is often the case when collaborating with young artists, the day of the performance was filled with a whirlwind of activity and a good dose of panic over props and costumes. This led to a rather amusing adventure where I found myself on a quest to hunt down a black skirt, the elusive Dungeons & Dragons dice, and multiple bags of Space Invaders.
The production coincided with the much-anticipated reopening of the Dorfman Theatre, which added an extra layer of excitement to the entire event. Once the production was complete, I had the opportunity to enjoy some delightful adventures through London while chaperoning the young company. The beautiful summer weather complemented our explorations and for the majority of the company this was there first ever time visiting London. This week not only marked a significant professional achievement for me but also created lasting memories with an incredibly talented group of young artists.
